Size Matters: How to Determine Proper Dog Run Sizes
Does size really matter when it comes to a dog run? It sure does! This blog tells you what you need to know when determining an appropriate size for a dog run!
While planning and designing a dog run, the appropriate size of the dog run depends on the size and breed of your dog.
It’s important to provide enough space for your dog to move around comfortably and engage in physical activities.
Considering and implementing the following into your dog run will help your dog run go the extra mile 😉
Length and Width
The dog run should be at least four times the length of your dog from nose to tail and twice the width of your dog when they are fully stretched out. This will allow them plenty of space to move around, stretch, and play without feeling cramped.
Height
The height of the dog run fencing should be at least 6 feet to prevent your dog from jumping over. This is especially important for large dog breeds or dogs with a tendency to jump such as huskies and wolfdogs.
Fortunately, it’s still pretty easy to find 6ft fencing materials, but if your dog is still able to climb out/jump over, using lean-ins or adding an escape proof roof would be a good idea. I have previous blogs where I talk about these concepts so make sure to check those out, but I will also be creating new blogs specifically on lean-ins and dig guards, so make sure to subscribe to the dog blogs to not miss out and to be notified when it’s released 😊
To make it easier for you, here are some 6ft fencing options that would be great for a dog run:
14ga. Galvanized Welded Wire 2″ x 2″ – Fence Roll (6′ x 100′)
Fencer Wire 12.5 Gauge Galvanized Welded Wire 2 Inch by 4 Inch Mesh
Fencer Wire 16 Gauge Black Vinyl Coated Welded Wire Mesh Size 1 inch by 1 inch (f. 6ft. x 50ft.)
With the above fencing, here are some 6ft posts for your dog run project that you could use:

Additional Space
In addition to the length and width, it’s beneficial to have some extra space for your dog to run and play. This can be achieved by making the dog run larger than the minimum size requirements mentioned above, if space allows.
Multiple Dogs
If you have multiple dogs or plan to have more than one dog in the future, consider the size and number of dogs when determining the size of the dog run. Ensure that there is enough space for all the dogs to comfortably interact and move around without feeling crowded. If you need any help, please contact me. I’m happy to assist.
Remember that these guidelines are general recommendations, and it’s important to consider the specific needs and activity levels of your dog. Some dogs may require more space to exercise and play, while others may be content with a smaller area. It’s always a good idea to consult with a dog kennel specialist to determine the appropriate size for your dog’s specific needs.
See you in the next blog 😊
